Short Description:

The Transportation Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety programs to ensure compliance with transportation regulations and protect the well-being of drivers, staff, and the public. This key leadership position oversees all safety aspects of transportation operations, including driver training, accident investigation, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The Transporation Safety Director works closely with operations teams to foster a safety-first culture while balancing operational efficiency and business objectives. This role requires strong analytical skills to identify safety trends and implement preventative measures that reduce incidents and maintain the company's safety performance metrics.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and programs in accordance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations
  • Conduct regular safety training programs for drivers and staff on topics such as defensive driving, hours of service, cargo securement, and hazardous materials handling
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Monitor driver compliance with hours of service requirements, vehicle inspection procedures, and other safety regulations
  • Perform regular safety audits of facilities, equipment, and operations to identify and address potential hazards
  • Maintain safety documentation including training records, inspection reports, accident reports, and regulatory filings
  • Analyze safety data and metrics to identify trends, develop safety initiatives, and report key performance indicators to management
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and HR departments to integrate safety practices into daily operations
  • Represent the company during regulatory inspections, audits, and in industry safety organizations
  • Stay current with changing transportation safety regulations and implement necessary program adjustments

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation safety management, preferably in trucking, logistics, or related transportation field
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Transportation, Business Administration, or related field; advanced degree preferred
  • Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), or similar professional safety certification; DOT compliance certification preferred
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency with safety management systems, Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), driver qualification file management, and transportation management software
  • Regulatory Expertise: In-depth knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other relevant transportation safety regulations and compliance requirements
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to develop and lead safety initiatives, influence behavior change, and foster a positive safety culture across all levels of the organization
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present safety information to diverse audiences from drivers to executive management
  • Analytical Skills: Strong data analysis capabilities to interpret safety statistics, identify trends, and develop effective corrective action plans
