Short Description:

A Data Center Technician installs, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots the servers, networking equipment, and supporting infrastructure within a data center. They diagnose hardware and connectivity problems, replace faulty components, manage cabling, and document maintenance activities to support reliable operations. They also follow security and safety procedures, maintain equipment inventories, and coordinate with IT and facilities teams to minimize service interruptions.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Install, rack, connect, test, and decommission servers, storage devices, switches, and other data center equipment.

  • Diagnose hardware failures and replace defective components, such as drives, memory modules, fans, and power supplies.

  • Install, label, organize, and inspect copper and fiber-optic cabling to maintain reliable connections and accurate equipment identification.

  • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues involving cables, ports, switches, and other networking hardware.

  • Perform routine equipment inspections and preventive maintenance according to established procedures.

  • Monitor equipment alerts and environmental conditions, including temperature, airflow, and power availability, and report abnormalities.

  • Record incidents, repairs, equipment changes, and troubleshooting results in issue-tracking systems and technical documentation.

  • Maintain hardware inventories, track replacement parts, and support equipment receiving, deployment, and disposal.

  • Support approved infrastructure changes, equipment upgrades, and installation projects while following change-management procedures.

  • Follow physical security, safe equipment-handling, and data-protection procedures; coordinate with engineers, vendors, and facilities teams when specialized support is needed.

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Data Center Operations: Knowledge of daily operating procedures, equipment maintenance, service availability, incident escalation, and controlled maintenance activities.

  • Computer Hardware: Ability to identify server components, diagnose equipment faults, replace parts, and verify successful repairs.

  • Networking Hardware and Routing: Understanding of switches, routers, network connections, basic IP addressing, and common connectivity problems.

  • Cabling and Telecommunications: Familiarity with copper and fiber-optic connections, patch panels, cable labeling, and cable-management practices.

  • Operating Systems: Working knowledge of Linux and other relevant operating systems, including basic commands, system logs, and diagnostic utilities.

  • Troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis: Ability to investigate technical issues systematically, interpret diagnostic results, and identify recurring failures.

  • Electrical and Mechanical Infrastructure Awareness: Basic understanding of power distribution, backup power, cooling, HVAC, and building-management systems. Specialized repair requirements depend on the position.

  • Data Center Layout and Efficiency: Awareness of rack arrangements, airflow, equipment placement, and power constraints that affect reliability and infrastructure efficiency.

  • Issue Tracking and Documentation: Ability to prioritize service tickets and maintain accurate repair records, asset information, and operating procedures.

  • Project Coordination and Inventory Control: Ability to support equipment deployments, coordinate assigned tasks, track supplies, and assist with inventory and operational audits.

  • Safety and Physical Requirements: Ability to handle and move equipment safely, use appropriate lifting assistance, and follow electrical, fire, and workplace safety procedures.

  • Communication and Organization: Clear communication with technical teams, effective shift handovers, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities.

  • Preferred Credentials: Relevant technical training or certifications, such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Server+, may strengthen qualifications; requirements vary by employer.
