A Construction Project Executive provides senior leadership for a major construction project or a portfolio of projects. They oversee project delivery, financial performance, client relationships, risk management, and team development from preconstruction through completion. Working through project managers and construction teams, they establish priorities, allocate resources, resolve escalated issues, and support new business opportunities. Strong commercial judgment, construction expertise, and leadership skills are essential for delivering profitable projects that meet safety, quality, and schedule expectations.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Establish project execution strategies, responsibilities, and performance expectations for major projects or a portfolio of construction work.

  • Oversee project managers and construction leadership teams, providing direction, accountability, mentoring, and performance feedback.

  • Review budgets, cost forecasts, cash flow, contingencies, and projected profitability; direct corrective action when performance falls below expectations.

  • Maintain senior client relationships, communicate project performance, and resolve issues escalated beyond the project-management team.

  • Lead commercial negotiations and oversee contracts, change orders, and claims within delegated authority.

  • Review project schedules, procurement requirements, and staffing plans to address constraints and maintain delivery commitments.

  • Oversee risk-management plans and coordinate responses to financial, contractual, design, construction, and operational risks.

  • Ensure project teams implement company safety standards, quality-control procedures, and applicable compliance requirements.

  • Support business development through proposals, client presentations, project pursuits, and relationships that generate repeat work.

  • Oversee project completion and closeout, including turnover, outstanding obligations, final financial reviews, and lessons learned.

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Executive Project Leadership: Ability to direct complex projects, establish priorities, and maintain accountability across multiple teams.

  • Construction Expertise: Extensive understanding of construction methods, building systems, design coordination, and project delivery processes.

  • Financial Management: Ability to interpret project financial reports, evaluate forecasts, manage profit-and-loss performance, and protect project margins.

  • Contract Management and Negotiation: Strong understanding of construction agreements, delivery methods, change management, and commercial negotiations.

  • Risk Management: Ability to identify significant project risks, evaluate their potential impact, and direct practical mitigation strategies.

  • Client Relationship Management: Ability to build trusted relationships with owners, developers, consultants, and other senior stakeholders.

  • Business Development: Experience supporting proposals, evaluating opportunities, presenting project approaches, and securing repeat business.

  • Team Leadership and Resource Allocation: Ability to develop project leaders, delegate effectively, and align staffing and resources with project requirements.

  • Preconstruction and Procurement: Knowledge of estimating, budgeting, subcontractor selection, purchasing strategies, and early project planning.

  • Schedule Oversight: Ability to evaluate master schedules, identify delivery risks, and guide recovery plans when projects fall behind.

  • Safety and Quality Leadership: Ability to hold teams accountable for safety performance, construction quality, inspections, and project acceptance requirements.

  • Executive Communication and Decision-Making: Ability to communicate complex issues clearly, resolve conflicts, and make timely decisions using operational and financial information.

  • Construction Management Software: Experience using project-management, scheduling, and financial-reporting platforms, such as Procore, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Office. Specific systems vary by employer.
