Short Description:

A Delivery Driver transports packages, products, or other goods to customers and designated locations. They organize deliveries, load and unload vehicles, follow assigned routes, and maintain accurate delivery records. They inspect vehicles, protect goods from damage, communicate delays, and provide professional customer service. Working with dispatch and warehouse teams, they help ensure deliveries arrive safely, accurately, and on time.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Review delivery assignments, addresses, schedules, and special handling instructions before starting a route.

  • Verify packages and goods against delivery records, checking quantities, labels, and visible condition.

  • Load, organize, and secure items to prevent damage and allow efficient unloading.

  • Operate the assigned vehicle safely and follow traffic laws and company driving procedures.

  • Follow delivery routes and use navigation tools to locate destinations and manage changing conditions.

  • Deliver and collect goods at customer locations, following access instructions and package placement procedures.

  • Record completed deliveries, pickups, signatures, or other required proof of delivery using approved systems.

  • Communicate with customers and dispatch about arrival times, delays, unsuccessful deliveries, or discrepancies.

  • Inspect the vehicle, report defects, and maintain required mileage, fuel, and vehicle condition records.

  • Return undelivered goods and complete assigned paperwork, payment records, or end-of-route handover procedures.

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Driving Credentials: A valid driver’s license appropriate for the assigned vehicle and a driving record that meets employer requirements.

  • Safe Vehicle Operation: Ability to maneuver, park, and operate delivery vehicles responsibly in traffic and at customer locations.

  • Navigation and Route Planning: Ability to follow maps, GPS directions, delivery sequences, and location-specific instructions.

  • Time Management: Ability to organize stops and meet delivery schedules while maintaining safe driving practices.

  • Package Handling: Ability to load, unload, carry, and move goods safely using suitable equipment or assistance.

  • Delivery Accuracy: Attention to addresses, quantities, labels, customer instructions, and delivery confirmation.

  • Vehicle Inspections: Ability to recognize and report problems involving tires, lights, fluid levels, or other vehicle components.

  • Delivery Technology: Familiarity with smartphones, handheld scanners, navigation tools, and electronic delivery records.

  • Customer Service: Professional, courteous interaction with customers when delivering goods or addressing routine concerns.

  • Communication and Problem Solving: Ability to report delays, clarify instructions, and coordinate solutions with dispatch or supervisors.

  • Documentation and Basic Mathematics: Ability to maintain delivery records and accurately handle receipts or payments when assigned.

  • Physical and Schedule Requirements: Ability to perform the position’s essential handling tasks and work the required schedule, potentially including weekends and outdoor conditions.

  • Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent is commonly preferred. Prior delivery, warehouse, or customer service experience may help; entry-level opportunities and employer training are available.
